Recently, OST was honored with the First Prize of the Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award for its participation in the project “Mechanisms and Systemic Prevention Technologies for Instabilities of Kilometer-Scale Ultra-Steep Slopes and Their Applications.” This prestigious recognition highlights OST’s continuous dedication and innovative achievements in the field of slope protection.

As China’s hydropower projects increasingly extend into high mountain and canyon regions in the southwest, the safety of kilometer-scale ultra-steep slopes has become a critical concern. Complex geological conditions and densely distributed hazardous rock masses pose significant challenges to major infrastructure construction. Led by the Yangtze River Survey and Planning Design Institute, with collaboration from Southwest Jiaotong University, OST, the research team tackled three key technical challenges over several years: unclear feedback-driven instability mechanisms, insufficient systemic prevention technologies, and limited full-area risk management. The outcome is a comprehensive slope protection solution integrating theory, technology, and engineering practice.
The project introduced the innovative “High-Protection Pre-Stabilization & Controlled Excavation” system, achieving breakthroughs from theoretical models to technical products. OST played a key role by independently establishing China’s first full-scale rockfall impact testing platform, simulating real-world dynamic impacts. The platform has conducted thousands of tests for over 20 research and design institutions, providing critical data for developing high-energy rockfall protection systems. Among the innovations is the high-energy guiding protection system, which effectively directs rockfall paths, controls bounce heights, and increases collision frequency. Verified through field blasting and high-altitude collapse impact tests, the system can withstand energy levels exceeding 12,000 kJ, offering a reliable technical solution for ultra-steep slope safety in China.
For years, OST has upheld a philosophy of technology-driven innovation, focusing on the development of critical safety technologies for engineering projects. Looking ahead, OST will continue to advance research and applications in rocakfall protection and geological disaster protection, providing robust technical support for major infrastructure projects and contributing professional expertise to the field of engineering safety.
